Aquari

Overview

Originating as a study in form, this travel hot water kettle was developed by adding function to a pre-developed abstract model. The shape of the model was created from a unique combination of lines, planes, and volumes.

Background

This project originated with a series of form studies around lines, planes, and rectilinear volumes and how those forms can interact with each other. Once the form of this object had been defined, a unique challenge was proposed: work backwards to create a functional product out of the defined form. This form was seen to lend itself well to a liquid container with a pop-open pour spout, and from there was developed into a hot water kettle.

The Aquari hot water kettle is unique in the fact that it is highly portable. Intended for the casual traveler who wants access to hot beverages at any moment, this hot water kettle wraps comfortably around the strap of a bag and has a watertight snap closed lid to prevent spillage during journeys.

Form and Features

The Aquari hot water kettle is unique in the fact that it is highly portable. Intended for the casual traveler who wants access to hot beverages at any moment, this hot water kettle wraps comfortably around the strap of a bag and has a watertight snap closed lid to prevent spillage during journeys.

Aquari is made primarily out of heat resistant plastic that can be easily hand-washed when necessary. With a maximum capacity of 32 fluid ounces, the Aquari hot water kettle is perfect for 2-3 mugs of your preferred hot beverage. In addition, the plug for the Aquari doubles as a fastening feature for travel by plugging back into itself and making a secure loop around any standard bag strap.

Process

The Aquari was developed through a series of models made of blue foam, wire, cardboard, and sheet plastic. Each version of the form expanded on the previous form, with the intention of making an aesthetically pleasing combination of lines, planes, and volumes that contained clear hierarchy and visual balance. Creating these forms required cutting, sculpting, and sanding using manual and electric tools.
